Superstar your Gmail messages to reduce the email clutter

image

With all things cool about Gmail this one is a bit handy. If you are a Gmail user you’d know about starring your emails so those can stand out from the hundreds or thousands of emails in your Inbox. But what if you have hundreds of starred emails? That again brings-in the same email overload. To tackle this Gmail allows you to assign different stars to your Gmail messages to distinguish them even better.

Follow these steps to assign different stars to your Gmail messages,

Step-1: Navigate to Gmail Settings

Click on the Settings link at the top of Gmail

Sign-in to your Gmail account and click on the “Settings” link at the top of the page.

Step-2: Navigate to Gmail Labs

Navigate to the "Labs" tab

Click on the “Labs” tab.

Step-3: Enable Superstars from Gmail Labs

Enable Superstars under Labs

Scroll down to locate the “Superstars” section and make sure to click on the “Enable” option. Hit the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the page.

Step-4: Customize the Superstars section

Once enabled you can customize the Superstars to pick and choose the Superstars that you want to use. Under the “General” tab you’ll find the section “Superstars”. There are 2 sections, “In use” and “Not in use”. Drag and drop the stars that you want to actively use from the “Not in use” section to the “In use” section. Once you are happy with the stars that you want to use hit the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the page.

Step-5: Assign different stars to your Gmail message

Assign different stars to you Gmail message

Navigate to your Gmail home page and choose an email that you want to assign different stars. Just click on the stars icon. Every time you click on the star icon it cycles thru the icons that you have customized on Step-4 to be “In use”.

Here are the Superstars that Gmail provides as of this writing,

  • Yellow Star
  • Green Star
  • Orange Star
  • Blue Star
  • Red Star
  • Purple Star
  • Green Check
  • Red Bang
  • Yellow Bang
  • Blue Info
  • Purple Question
  • Orange Guillemet

The rationale behind those different icons makes sense but the rationale behind the different stars is to let you decide what those different color of stars mean to you. For example, you can assign Red Stars to the most important of all your messages, Orange Stars to some of the messages that you want to act on later etc.

Also, you can search for those Superstar messages but using these conventions,

  • has:yellow-star
  • has:green-star
  • has:orange-star
  • has:blue-star
  • has:red-star
  • has:purple-star
  • has:green-check
  • has:red-bang
  • has:yellow-bang
  • has:blue-info
  • has:purple-question
  • has:orange-guillemet
