How to open the search results in a new tab in Firefox?

Applicable to Firefox

If you use Firefox as your web browser you might find it pretty handy to have the search box right next to the URL box (aka, Awesome Bar). But the inconvenience is that the search results open in the same active tab and sometimes that’s not what we want. If you’d prefer to have the search results from the Search box always display in a new tab, follow these steps,

Step-1: Open Firefox Configuration

Open Firefox Configuration

Launch Firefox, if you haven’t already, and type-in about:config in the URL bar. When you get the message of “This might void your warranty!” just click on the “I’ll be careful, I promise” button.

Step-2: Filter down to “browser.search.openintab

Filter down to “browser.search.openintab”

Type-in “browser.search.openintab” in the “Filter” box. Firefox will filter down to “browser.search.openintab” entry. You might notice that the “Value” column has a value of “false” by default.

Step-3: Change the “browser.search.openintab” value to TRUE

Change the “browser.search.openintab” value to TRUE

Double-click on the “browser.search.openintab” entry to toggle the “false” value to “true”.

Step-4: Restart the browser

Restart your Firefox browser for the changes to take effect.

Now. when you use the Search box on your Firefox browser the search results will open up in a new tab.
