Speed up your web browsing with Opera 10 Beta’s Turbo Mode
Opera 10 Beta’s Turbo Mode loads web pages faster than ever on slower networks.
Opera released its Opera 10 Beta browser and it has some pretty neat features along with an interface revamp. The most talked about are,
Opera Turbo
“Using state-of-the-art compression technology, Opera Turbo unclogs your connection so you can get to your content. Opera Turbo easily delivers 3x to 4x the speed of slower connections and can offer broadband-like speeds on dial-up.”
Visual Tabs
“Drag the handle underneath the tabs to reveal thumbnails of your open Web pages. With visual tabs it is easy and fast to get an overview of all your open tabs and their contents.”
Customizable Speed Dial
“Choose between 4 to 25 favorite Web sites for quick access every time you open a new tab. You can even add a custom background so you feel right at home.”
Of these, the most interesting is the Opera Turbo feature that makes web pages load faster on slower networks. As quoted, it uses some sort of a compression technology to speed-up page downloads. The net result is 3 to 4 times faster page load performance on slower network connections.
Opera 10 Beta doesn’t come with Opera Turbo turned on. Follow these steps to turn on Opera Turbo feature on a Mac.
Download Opera 10 Beta
Download and install Opera 10 Beta.
Open Opera Turbo

Click on the dashboard icon at the bottom left on the browser window.

That will open up a page that gives you some information on Opera Turbo mode.

Now when you browse some web page you’ll be able to notice Opera Turbo in action. In the above screenshot it indicates that it’s making the page download 3 times faster than normal connection.
Configure Opera Turbo

You can configure Opera Turbo mode by right-clicking on the Opera Turbo icon and choosing “Configure Turbo…”.

Opera will open up Opera Turbo Settings dialog and in that you can force it to enable Turbo mode all the time or you can set it to go automatic.
Opera Turbo mode would certainly come in handy for those who are on slower network connections. Since it’s in Beta I can’t tell for sure how much it improves the page download performance but I hope it sure does some improvement.
If you notice any explicit speed improvements or if you have any questions regarding this please let us know in comments.
