Get things done quicker on your Mac with Dropzone

Dropzone makes it a lot easier and simpler to do repetitive tasks on your Mac.

There are few tasks on your Mac is pretty trivial like for example launching an app. You just click an icon on the Dock (if you have the app added to the Dock) and the app would launch. Pretty simple and straight-forward. Now imagine a task like installing an app.

That would involve mounting the disk image, finding the application inside the disk image, copying it to your Applications folder, launching the app (optionally), ejecting the disk image and then finally (yes, finally!) moving the disk image file to the trash. That, for many of us, is not simple and straight-forward. Imagine tasks like these, for example, sending an email with attachments, uploading pictures to Flickr, shortening an URL etc. These involve multiple steps and are error prone.

Dropzone is a simple Mac app that helps ease this pain and makes doing these tasks a lot simpler and easier. All you do is drop the items to the Dropzone icon (on your Dock) and choose the action you wanted to perform and Dropzone will take care of the rest of the business. It is one of the apps that well deserves a place on your Mac Dock.

Dropzone comes with some pre-defined actions that everyone of us do normally (for the most part),

  • Launch Applications
  • Install Applications
  • Upload to Flickr
  • Upload to an FTP site
  • Save text to a text file
  • Zip and send emails with attachments

Most of these actions involve multiple steps and Dropzone makes it easy to do these in very few steps. If you think these actions are pretty basic you would love to hear that Dropzone can be extended with custom actions. It has a powerful Ruby based API that allows you to extend Dropzone’s capability so it can do a lot more.

There are already quite a few Dropzone extensions out there. Few of the interesting extensions would be,

  • Share photos on Twitter via TwitPic
  • Share documents on Twitter via TwitDoc
  • Upload images to ImageShack
  • Share photos and documents on Posterous
  • Share files via DropBox
  • Zip files to Desktop
  • Print files that are dropped to Dropzone
  • Put your Mac to sleep
  • Shorten an URL using bit.ly

Dropzone is a very simple app that makes it simpler to do things on our Mac, especially the things that you do repeatedly.

You might think an app with these goodies would make a dent on your wallet. Well, it’s not. It is just $10 and I think that would be a $10 that’s well spent.

Give Dropzone a try.
