AlternativeTo is a service that lists some of the best and useful softwares for your computer based on popularity. It uses a voting system similar to Digg to find out about the popularity of those applications. You can use AlternativeTo to find applications for all 3 of the major platforms, Windows, Mac and Linux. It also has a “Online” tab where you can find some useful web apps.

On the home page you can sort applications based on most viewed, most liked and recently added applications which gives you enough choices to drill-down the long list of applications.

You can click on the app name to see more details about the app including screenshots if available.

You can use the “Find alternatives to…” link to find applications of similar nature. The details would include a description, screenshots, delicious bookmarks about that app, statistics on how well the main app stack against some of those alternatives etc. These information would certainly give you an idea of whether the app is worth occupying your hard disk real-estate.

If you know an app that’s not listed at AlternativeTo, you can suggest applications to AlternativeTo so others can benefit out of.

I’ve discovered couple of useful applications using AlternativeTo, both for my Mac and Windows computers and thought of sharing it with you. I hope you find it useful as well.
