Use Bing theme for Windows 7 to get cool automatic desktop backgrounds from Bing.com.

On top of the different search experience that Bing.com provides, its eye-catching background images are another feature that attracts the most. How about bringing those nice Bing.com images to Windows 7 desktop backgrounds? It’s very simple.

Just download the “Bing.theme” file. You can save it anywhere, it doesn’t really matter.

Double-click on the Bing.theme file.

You’ll be prompted to download attachments or not. Bing theme for Windows 7 uses an RSS feed to get those nice desktop background images. What’s the point of using Bing theme without those background images? So, go ahead and click on the “Download Attachments” option.

Your Windows 7 theme will change to Bing theme (darker taskbar would be the first indication) and you’ll see the above screen with the “Bing” theme chosen. You should now be able to see those Bing images on your desktop background.

If you’d like to customize the images displayed or the frequency of changing the picture, right-click on the desktop and click on the “Personalize” menu option. Given the age of Windows XP I guess most of us get tired of looking at the age-old user interface. The good part is that Windows XP allows you to update the user interface look and feel without much hassle.

Before we get to see the 15 best looking Windows XP themes let’s just make sure we can apply these themes to our Windows XP machines.

Since these themes are developed by third-party developers Windows XP will not directly apply and use these themes. You have to do a workaround to get Windows XP tuned-up to make use of third-party themes.

Start by downloading UxTheme Patcher and install it. If you use Windows XP SP3 then you might want to download UxTender instead. During installation Windows XP might complain about attempting to replace system files and might ask you to insert Windows XP installation media. Once in there you’ll have to choose the phone that you want the custom theme to be applied. Actually the service won’t apply the theme directly but it asks for the phone model so it can create the theme files accordingly. Once you choose the phone look for the "Color Your Phone" link at the top of the page. Click on that link and you’ll be presented with a page where you’ll see 3 different pages of the new Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Choose the page that you feel more comfortable to work with.

You can also use the "Portrait" or "Landscape" buttons at the bottom of the screen to choose the orientation.

This page would allow you to upload an image to be used as the wallpaper, size and position the wallpaper, adust the color settings, adjust the contrast settings and choose the effects that you want to apply to the wallpaper.

You can use the "Size/Position" button to reveal the above page where you can flip, rotate and resize the wallpaper.

You can use the "Color" button to adjust the "Hue", "Saturation" and "Tint" factors of the wallpaper.

You can use the "Contrast" button to adjust the contrast and brightness of the wallpaper image.

You can use the "Effects" button to apply different effects to the wallpaper including emboss, monochromatic, invert color, blur and cartoonize.

That’s all to creating custom theme for your Windows Mobile 6.5 phone. Once created you have to send the theme file to your mobile phone to apply the theme there. You can do this by either sending it over to the phone as a SMS message or you can use ActiveSync to transfer the theme information to your Windows Mobile 6.5 phone.

Transfer theme information using USB cable and ActiveSync

Click on the "Save" button and select a folder on your local computer where you want the theme to be saved. Remeber the theme file will be saved as ".cab" file. Use Microsoft ActiveSync to transfer the ".cab" file to your mobile phone. After the transfer completes navigate to the ".cab" file on your mobile phone and tap on the file to extract it. Then tap the "Start" button and then the "Settings" button and then tap on the "Today" link. When asked to select a theme choose the theme that you’ve just un-cabbed.

Receive theme information via SMS message

Enter your mobile phone number and hit the "Send" button. You’ll receive an SMS message that contains a link to download the ".cab" file. Tap on the link and download the ".cab" file to your "My Documents" folder on your phone. Click on the ".cab" file to extract the theme information from the ".cab" file. Then tap on the "Start" button and then on the "Settings" button and then on the "Today" link. You’ll be prompted to choose a theme and make sure to choose the above un-cabbed theme file.

Make Visual Studio look better with Visual Studio themes.

If you are a developer on the Microsoft world I’m sure you must be using the ultra-famous Visual Studio IDE day-in and day-out. Well, after using it for a while you might start to feel bored with the same old look and feel.

Not any more! You can customize Visual Studio to have different look. It is actually quite easy to do.

Start by clicking on the “Tools” and then the “Import and Export Settings…” menu.

On the “Import and Export Settings Wizard” dialog choose if you’d want to export or import the selected environment settings.

Exporting environment settings would allow you to apply the same theme settings on different machines while importing would allow you to import a custom theme setting. If you’ve made a mistake or the theme misbehaves you can also reset all environment settings.

If you are to export the settings Visual Studio will ask you for a filename and the location to save the file.

If you are to import a theme setting Visual Studio will prompt you with the above dialog so you can save the current settings before importing the new settings. If you are confident enough you can just go ahead and import the new settings which will eventually overwrite your current settings.

Choose the appropriate settings file you want to import from. For the settings to show up on your My Settings list you should have the .vssettings file under your “My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\themes” folder. If you don’t find the file you can, of course, browse for the .vssettings file.

Then choose the appropriate settings from the list. Since these are theme settings I would choose all the settings on the list.

Once you hit the “Finish” button Visual Studio will apply the theme settings and will acknowledge with the above dialog.

That’s it! You should now be able to see the new theme in action on your Visual Studio IDE. Keep in mind that these themes are meant to customize the fonts and colors on your IDE than the overall theme of Visual Studio. And, of course, customizing those fonts and colors would be ideal choice if you are spending day-in and day-out on Visual Studio.

For those of you who don’t know how to set your Twitter background to a custom image, read on.

Sign-in to your Twitter account and click on the “Settings” link at the top right side of the page.

Once on the Settings page click on the “Design” tab and then click on the “Change background image” link to change just the background picture.

Twitter will ask you to pick an image file. Choose the file and if you have a smaller file that doesn’t fit completely to your Twitter page you can make the image tile horizontally. To do that click on the “tile background” option.

Once you change your background image you might want to adjust the color scheme of your Twitter pages to make it blend with the new background image. Click on the “Change design colors” link to choose custom colors.

Once done make sure to click on the “Save Changes” button to make these changes permanent.

Google Chrome Beta allows you to customize the look and feel.

Google Chrome is a great browser with some creative innovations baked right-into the browser along with the built-in super-speed Javascript engine. Along with missing plugins management, the only other thing that’s (majorly) missing was the ability to customize the browser to have a different look.

With Google Chrome Beta (Google Chrome 3.0.195.3 and above) you can apply themes to customize the Google Chrome browser. There are around 29 different themes available at this point of time and you can expect it to grow further and get cleaner. Right now, it looks like some of the themes are pretty silly. Having said that, there are some themes that brings you a different feel when using the browser.

Select the theme you wish to try and click on the “Apply this Theme” button.

Chrome will ask you to save the “.crx” file. Save it to any location, it doesn’t matter.

Once saved, Chrome will apply the theme and will acknowledge the change.

Best Internet Explorer 8 theme for Firefox browser.

Firefox is one of the most famous browser out there but if you use it on Windows (Vista or 7) you might find that it doesn’t integrate nicely with the Windows UI look and feel. Of course there are too many add-on themes available at the Mozilla Add-ons site but this IE8 theme “Vista-Aero” is a standout as it best integrates with the Windows Vista (or 7)’s glassy look.

Vista-Aero does a decent job of making your Firefox browser look like a native application to Windows. But it lacks the glassy feel and also the true look of IE8. Glasser and Hide Menu Bar extensions fills the gap. Currently the Glasser extension works only on the lower versions of Firefox so if you are still using an older version then you might enjoy the glassy feel of Firefox on Windows. Nevertheless, the extension will be updated soon to comply with the latest versions of Firefox.

The author also recommends that if you’ve upgraded your Windows Vista to SP1 then not to try this pack. If you haven’t upgraded to Windows Vista SP1 then you can use this pack to change the look of your Windows Vista to look more like Mac OSX Leopard.

Got tired of the look and feel of the default Gmail page? Have been using hacks like Greasemonkey Scripts to spruce up the Gmail page? Not any more. Gmail now officially has Themes support. It looks like they are rolling out this feature only for certain accounts so if you are lucky to be on that list give this a try. Follow these steps to enable themes on Gmail,

Step-1:

Click on the “Settings” link at the top of the Gmail page.

Step-2:

If you can see a “Themes” tab then you are one of those few. Click on the “Themes” tab and you should be able to see a bunch of (31 at the time of writing this) themes listed. Choose the one you like and your Gmail page will reload with the new theme.

Windows Vista’s user interface is a lot better than its predecessor Windows XP. We all know that. But still there are many “theme addicts”, like me, who wouldn’t (or couldn’t) be satisfied with the default look and feel of Windows Vista or would quickly get bored of the look and feel of the operating system’s UI. So, if you are of that category then how do you customize Windows Vista’s theme?

By now, you should know that Windows Vista, by default, does not allow you to install custom themes other than the ones signed by Microsoft (Vista Aero, Vista Basic, Vista Standard etc.) But don’t lose hope on seeing a custom look on your Windows Vista computer.

There are 2 ways to patch Windows Vista to allow custom themes,

• the easy way
• the dirty way (I call it “dirty” because it involves hands-on plumbing work).

If you don’t want to get your hands dirty then there is a simple tool that makes life easier to patch the files to let Windows Vista allow custom themes.

Enter VistaGlazz.

VistaGlazz is a simple utility that you can download from CodeGazer. VistaGlazz allows you to patch the files on Windows Vista to allow custom themes. All you do is run VistaGlazz and follow these instructions and VistaGlazz will do the dirty work for you.

Patch the core files

Step-1:

If you haven’t done yet, download VistaGlazz from CodeGazer.

Step-2:

Run VistaGlazz from where you’ve downloaded. VistaGlazz gives you this dialog. Click the “I agree” button.

Step-3:

VistaGlazz will display this dialog. By default, VistaGlazz displays the first icon (“Patch Style” button, the one with the monitor) without the green tick mark like this,

Click on the icon. VistaGlazz will patch your system files and when done will ask you to restart the computer. Let it restart.

Step-4:

Once the computer restarts and comes back up and running, run VistaGlazz again. This time you’ll see the “Patch Style” button having a green tick mark. Congratulations! you’ve successfully patched your Windows Vista installation to allow custom themes.

Step-5:

Now, go download some of your favorite Windows Vista custom themes. You can try some of the themes from these locations,

• http://www.neowin.net/
• http://www.winmatrix.com/
• http://www.joejoe.org
• http://www.aeroxp.org
• http://www.crystalxp.net

Undo Changes

If you are having trouble with your computer’s look and feel after you’ve patched the files then you can get back to the original files by follow these steps,

Step-1:

Launch VistaGlazz.

Step-2:

Click on the “Patch Style” button (the first icon) again and VistaGlazz will provide you with the option to unpatch the files (which in turn will undo the changes that you’ve made with VistaGlazz).

Patch the Aero Transparency Issue

If you are not happy with Vista Aero’s lack of transparency on maximized windows, then you can follow these steps to get transparency on the maximized windows as well,

Step-1:

If VistaGlazz is not already running then launch VistaGlazz.

Step-2:

Click on the second icon (that has a color palette). (It’ll have a gray color shield icon by default)

Step-3:

VistaGlazz will patch your Aero style and restart the Windows Desktop Manager (WDM). Your screen will flicker and for a moment might lose its transparency. Once things settle down in a minute then VistaGlazz will change the gray shield into a green shield with a tick mark. Congratulation! you’ve now successfully patched the Aero transparency issue. Enjoy the new transparency on maximized windows.

Windows 7 user interface is not official yet but some of the leaked screenshots reveal a little bit of what to expect. Vrushal Gupta came up with another great Windows Vista theme that mimics those leaked screenshots of Windows 7. Apart from that it has 3 cool features that make it worth trying.

1. New Taskbar which is very similar to the taskbar on Windows Seven (minor improvement over Windows Vista).
2. Transparent title bar on Maximized windows. What that means is that the title bar now has glass reflection on maximized windows as well.
3. New Shell-Style in Control Panel similar to Windows Seven.

Download and try Windows 7 theme on Windows Vista.

If you use Windows Vista but can’t get Aero to perform better on your computer then you are stuck with the Basic theme in Vista which is pretty blank in colors and look. There are many themes that you can use to skin Vista Basic to look a little better but this Vista Blue RTM theme from Vishal Gupta looks pretty neat and the blue flavor makes it acceptable at work.
